Studying + caregiving

Are you combining your studies at KdG with caring for someone who, due to illness, disability, old age, mental health issues, or addiction, requires frequent support? If so, a caregiving status could make things easier for you.

Since this type of status involves providing regular care for another person, it is only available to students who live in Belgium.

How can you apply for an individual learning certificate?

Your application comprises the following steps:

  • Go to https://studentfile.kdg.be and register.
  • Click on ‘new application’ and then Individual Learning Certificate. Fill in your application in English or Dutch.
  • Upload your certificates/supporting documents if necessary.
  • Submit your application before the deadline.
  • You will be assigned a contact person via email. Make an appointment with your contact person.
  • As a student you can follow the status of your application in your digital student file. If your application with individual study and examination arrangements is approved, you will find your individual learning certificate in your digital student file. You will be able to consult this certificate at all times there. Print the certificate to make use of special examination arrangements during the exams.

Your special status is valid for one academic year. You arrange the extension yourself in your student file (>extendable files) once you are re-enrolled.  If you enrol in a new programme, you apply for a new special status.

How can you demonstrate this?

Upload the informal caregiver certification you receive from your health insurance provider to your student file. Your health insurance provider requires a sworn statement to issue this certification. You can find more information about these certifications on the Steunpunt Mantelzorg website (only Dutch).

  • Caregiver Certification Type 1 (no time limit)
  • Caregiver Certification Type 2 (valid for 1 year)
